Fighting Burnout: For Yoga Teachers

Do you feel like you’re being pulled in 10 different directions? Struggling to balance all of your different obligations? The things that used to excite you don’t any more and the goals you had a year ago have been completely forgotten about?

The fact that you clicked on this blog in the first place means you’re probably experiencing burnout or on the path to it very soon.

So, what can you do about it?

I became a yoga teacher because I was burnt out and had lost my flame. Admittedly this was quite a radical move but it was honestly the BEST decision of my life. I now LOVE my job,

I’m excited every day (well almost every day) and I get to create yoga teacher trainings that I wished existed for me. When you’re in that state of burnout it can be so hard to see anything else. Its so hard to find time for yourself because you’re too busy but if you want to regain any semblance of balance you NEED to put yourself back into the equation and in a more meaningful way than one movie night once on a Friday. You need to go deeper.

Here are my suggestions or ideas:

  1. An Embodied Yoga Retreat

A change of scenery, meals provided for you and a chance to reconnect with what you truly want. Sometimes breaking routine is exactly what you need. Plus, ending the evening with yoga leads to deep, restful sleep which will leave you feeling invigorated.

We have a beautiful Embodied Yoga Retreat in Ballyvalloo Wexford in February every year, if that tickles your fancy or there are a number of amazing yoga retreats available.

2. Movement

Lunchtime walks, run, gym or a morning yoga practise. Incorporating movement in your daily life is so beneficial. Now I know you’re probably thinking I’m already stretched thin, how the hell am I going to fit this in too?

We offer an Early Risers Class, half an hour of movement to start your day 3 times a week before everyone else gets up.

Lunchtime - go for a 10 minute walk or walk to the further away cafe on your lunch break.

I found that carving it out before my day starts is really the only way that works for me. Over the years, I have alternated between yoga and running in the mornings, and I always feel SO MUCH better!

3. Energy

Support yourself by fuelling your body with real food as opposed to caffeine. I used to forget to eat lunch because the kids needed to be picked up and I needed to get X done before the school run. I’d then wonder why I drank 5 coffees a day!

Also, some sort of sleep routine. Peppermint tea and yoga before bed for example.

I hope these tips are helpful and spark some ideas. I used to push down all the signs I was feeling, I didn’t have time or energy for it but if I’ve learnt anything its to take the signs seriously and do something about it early because the longer you leave it the worse it gets.
