5 Benefits of Chanting in your Yoga Class

Why should we chant? Will people get on board with chanting? Is there even any point in including ohm?

YES!

Especially if you teach chair classes or ageing individuals

Embodied Yoga is about integrating and connecting our mind to our body, and it supports us off the mat. Chanting will benefit all of your students immensely off the mat.

I’m a bit self conscious

Don’t worry! Your students will get behind you and I have a terrible “Ohm” and still do it!

It’s worth the nerves for the immense benefits it will bring to your students

Let’s get into the 5 reasons you should include chanting in your yoga classes and especially your chair yoga classes!

  1. Voice is a muscle

Like all other muscles in our body we need to use it to keep it. As we age we tend to use our voice less! Chanting or Ohm will support your students before, during or after that period

2. Chanting to support isolation

As we age we become withdrawn, quieter and the quieter we get the harder it is to re-engage. Chanting supports students come back out of their shell and learn how to use their voice again. It might result in something magical like them saying hi to the shop assistant or them getting involved in dinner time conversation when they normally wouldn’t. These amazing impacts off the mat are truly magical.

3. Agency

People tend to go in on themselves as they age, become quieter, advocate for themselves less, everything becomes “grand”.

Chanting supports students retain that agency so when they go to the doctor, when something doesn’t feel right or when they just fancy a cup of tea they ask!

4. Breath

5. Parkinson’s or other illnesses

Parkinson’s is degenerative and singing, ohming or chanting will really support your students to retain the ability to speak.

Much like we focus on bone density as we age we also need to support the voice.
