Chair Yoga Poses for Balance

Chair Yoga is a phenomenal practise - it is amazing addition to a general yoga class or as a class on its own.

Chair Yoga supports

  • Mobility

  • Strength

  • Balance

  • Reducing muscle pain

Here are 5 Chair Yoga Poses you can do for balance!

Remember as always never go into pain and support your yoga students to take the pose that suits them that day.

Lunge

  • Make sure you are using a solid chair

  • Place the chair on a yoga mat or something else to stop it from slipping

  • Using the chair for support gently lift your leg and place it back - only as far as is comfortable without losing your balance! You can slowly walk the leg back rather than doing it in one movement

Downward Dog

  • Stand facing your chair

  • Place hands on the seat or back - if this is your first time trying it use the back of the chair rather than the seat

  • Walk feet back until your torso is parallel to the floor, forming an "L" shape with your body while keeping legs and spine long

Downward Dog Drills

  • Stand about one foot away from the back of the chair

  • Lift one leg and take your knee out to the side (its like peeing dog!)

Warrior

  • Begin in your lunge position as described above

  • Ensure your feet are planted solidly on the ground

  • When you are ready, lift one hand off the chair and reach up to the sky

Dancer

  • Begin standing about a foot away from the chair

  • Wrap a strap around your ankle

  • When you are ready, gently lift your leg up using the strap

With all of these poses it is important to ensure you are using a solid chair and a non-slip surface (a yoga mat works really well!)
